In a car, there are 4 ways an engine can be placed:

1. Front Engine - Front Wheel Drive

2. Front Engine - Rear Wheel Drive

3. Mid Engine - Rear Wheel Drive

4. Rear Engine - Rear Wheel Drive

The engines are placed transversly but there are special condtitions where it can be set longitudinally:

1. It is a Mid Engine - Rear Wheel Drive

2. It is a Rear Engine - Rear Wheel Drive

Some advantages and disadvantages of Front Wheel Drive

Advantages:

- It is safer ( easier to steer )

- More efficient cost and performance

- Less components ( easier to assemble )

Disadvantages

- Torque Steer

- Lack of weight shifting causing less traction

Some advanntages and disadvantages of Rear Wheel Drive

Advantages:

- Better at towing

- No torque steer

- Better weight balance

Disadvantages:

- Less space

- Weight transfer when braking

There are also other factors to be considered (

eg. packaging, reliability, handling, complexity and etc. )
