As a start to vehicle systems, we had a group discussion about the major components of the cooling system of a race car and their functions.
Major components:
Radiator - water storage
Fan - blows air to cool water in radiator
Hoses - carry water from engine to radiator ( vice versa )
Water Tank - water filler tank and level monitoring
Pump - pressurizes water through the system for circulation
Coolant Temperature Sensor - measures and senses coolant temperature
Thermostat - ensure a quick warm up to the engine
and etc.
In a cooling system, we also need to consider topics which are apllied to the cooling system. Such as:
Related topics:
Thermodynamics, Gas Laws, Heat Capacity, Fluid Behaviours, Fluid Compositions, Materials, Forces, Pressure, etc.
We also had the opportunity to have a closer look at a Ginetta G55 cooling system and made a schematic diagram of it.
